Waikaraka Park 3 Feb 2007 – Modified Super Dirt Cup

Well could you believe it, another meeting at Waikaraka for the Superstock class. I got such a shock with being able to race back to back weeks I didn't even have time to wash the car. Just joking, there wasn’t any room in the workshop over the previous week so the car just stayed locked up in the back of the transporter.

As it ended up I think there were 10 Superstocks present and ready to race, with just one visitor, 33r(?) Robbie Mabey. A big thank you to Robbie for making the trip visitors are always welcome.

Race 1.
The track was looking a whole heap better tonight, a little bit damp but would soon dry out and provide plenty of drive. I was looking forward to the chance of loading the car up properly to see if the new changes to the ignition timing were going to suit or if I need to make a couple of fine adjustments. I got a good start from 3rd but with not a lot of rubber on the rear wheels it is hard to keep the car tight to the pole line. So while I did still have good speed I didn’t have as much grip as the others and I lost a few places. Which got a whole lot worst when 78a (Darryl Clarkson) got spun ahead I wasn’t able to pull the car down tight and I tapped his back bumper. Which meant the whole field got by, pushing on I started to crawl back some ground on the pack ahead (which felt ready good) by the end of the race I made up a whole heap and managed to finish just behind 33r. Unfortunately I had forgotten to charge my transponder so I wasn’t included in the results. More important was that it would have been good to see if my lap times had changed from the previous week…..Oh well.

Race 2.
Ended much sooner than I had expected. Just moving up into my grid slot, I gave the engine a rev to move up faster and I heard a huge bang and then the car started to vibrate . My first thoughts were that the clutch had come loose or half the drive shaft had broken. After being towed into the pits we looked under the car to find the torque arm with a huge bend and twist in it which had pulled the diff over into the battery box. Also the angle on the drive shaft was not the best.
With no way of fixing it before the next race the car was winched back up into the truck.

The 53a car has since been pulled out of the truck and placed in the workshop where parts are being stripped off it for Bryce to take as spares for this weekend’s Teams Nationals in Palmerston North. Good luck to the Auckland team for this weekend, I just wish I could get down there to support the team as it will be a great weekend of racing.

Catch ya….MadPhil

Oh it was good to see that I get another week to comment about the water truck at Waikaraka Park. For those of you who were wondering, yes it did hit the tow truck.
