53a Work in Progress
Well the car won't be going for the next up and coming weeks but it is looking better all the time. I purchased a Winters Quick Change with alloy axle for the car. It is much lighter than the speedway engineering diff in the old 53a car, so we just have to hope it can take the hits. It didn't come with birdcages or hubs, but with a call to Cardwells I had 2 new hubs delivered.
We were giving the details of the bearing to use for the birdcages but after a talk with the guys at Bretmar Transmission Co in Papakura we have much better and stronger bearings. We have taken a template from the birdcages on the 73a car and within the next week or so we should be able to make some up.
In other news I now also have a twin plate clutch for the car which bolts directly onto the flexplate, so with no need for a flywheel the engine will accelerate faster. With a smaller clutch it makes making the bellhousing real easy. The bellhousing will simply be a pipe around 21cm X 11cm X 4mm with a plate either end to mount it to the engine and gearbox.
Hopefully there will be racing tomorrow night. There is currently 3 A grade stockcars (superstocks) sitting in the shed that are pretty much ready to race so it would be nice if the weather clears up so we can go and blow out some cobwebs. We were not able to race at Huntly last week as we had a marx family function to all attend but for the next few weeks the weekends are empty and reserved for racing.
