Well the Toyota V8 engine that blew in the 53a machine has been removed from the chassis.

What a sad sight! After lifting the engine we realised that we could see right through the block.

After taking the cylinder heads off we found that the no.1 piston had hit the head so hard that part of the piston head had broken off. There is not much to say really, I'll let the images speak for themselves.

Not Good
Good

Basically it looks like the con rod snapped and has spun around a few times before stretching and breaking the right rod bolt. Once the bolt snapped the main cap came loose and deformed itself enough to disintegrate. The parts that broke off then bounced around inside the engine and caused heaps of damage. Pretty much everything in the block of the engine is a throw away. Even the oil pickup pipe has been destroyed.

The orange you can see in the picture on the right is actually the 53a side rail, so you are looking straight through the block. Below is a picture of the no.1 crankshaft journal. It should look all smooth and clean, you can even make out some of the impact marks on the no.2 con rod.

Another set back in the rebuilding of a good race engine is that one of the head we were going to use has been crack tested, but the crack cannot be welded. So we will have to get to work to start porting another head.
